Simeon has volunteers from all over the world who come to experience what it is like to live with others and to care for older people. Volunteers at Simeon live alongside other volunteers and the elderly residents. Some of our older people are very ill and frail and need a lot of physical care. Others do quite a lot themselves, but may want help to go out to enjoy the garden or go for a walk. Some have learning disability or dementia. Some are ordinary old people like perhaps your own grandparents. It is a rich and rewarding experience, and also can be very demanding.
As a volunteer you are on shift with a team of professional carers providing care for some very ill and frail people, some of whom may die while you are with us. Our volunteers must be ready and willing to learn how to give intimate personal care such as help with bathing, toileting, feeding, and dressing. We will provide training in how to provide personal care, and further training in some aspects of elder care. Older people also need support to do hobbies, have conversations, play games, enjoy music and singing etc, and volunteers are a valuable addition to the care team, helping to maintain and enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of our residents. Living together means everyone joins in to support our Homemaking and Kitchen Teams in keeping the house clean and welcoming, washing up in the evening, laying the tables for meals…in fact all the normal tasks that any family has to do.
We would like you to think carefully before applying to work here. Why don’t you check out the video below and read Felma’s story…
